AUGUST NEWSLETTER
The idea to start Mac Brothers Catering Equipment (Pty) Ltd was born early in 2002 by Philip and myself. At that time we were still actively
involved in the Restaurant franchising trade. We had an idea to open a catering equipment supply business as we had for many years been unhappy with the service in this industry.
About this time the company who were supplying us with equipment, C.A.A.R.S. was purchased by Vulcan Catering Equipment (part of the Bidvest Group). It seemed to us that there was a gap in the market for an
alternative supplier in the market, to take on the industry leaders.
We initially thought that we would be able to run the company mornings only and still attend to our Restaurant business the rest of the day! We secured premises at 176 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock (which amazingly enough was the old premises for President Trading who later became Vulcan). At this stage, apart from Philip and myself, Zaibon Fredericks joined the Team and we inherited Lama, an old C.A.A.R.S. employee.
Our first major contract, Witbank Casino hit a crisis, at the last minute
our suppliers dropped us and were in a serious situation trying to find
equipment suppliers to meet the client’s requirements.
At this stage we knew that we had to become self sufficient and made contact with Ivan Burns who was at that time working for
Joffé Engineering, the company contracted to supply us. We invited Ivan to join our fledging company and armed with a cheque
book, Philip & Ivan then went out to purchase the original Brakepress, Guillotine and Welding machines, some of which are still in
use in the factory today. Ivan brought with him the original thirteen staff members who had worked with him previously at C.A.A.R.S.
and they proceeded with building Sabenza Manufacturing Systems (Pty) Ltd into what it is today.
Our next priority was to set up a Design Department and at this stage Herman Swart joined the team. Today, Mac Brothers have a
world class Design Team & system and we are acknowledged as the industry leaders in this field.
Early in our history we kept receiving phone calls from a mad guy who wanted to open a Mac Brothers branch in Johannesburg and
eventually we agreed. The first delivery of equipment was off loaded at Craig Roff’s house who moved all his furniture & TV out of
the lounge area to make way for a Dish Washing Section.
A major contributing factor to our success was the purchase of our own building
in Epping and we are pursuing the purchase of another building in Johannesburg
where Craig and his Team will be able to expand their influence in the industry
in the same way as we did in Cape Town.
The rest, as they say, is history. With a staff compliment of just under 200 and
a total company turnover this year, approaching R160 million, from very
humble beginnings we ought to be proud of where we have got to after 5 years.
It has been a magnificent team effort and I salute all our staff members,
past and present for our achievements to date!
Derek McMahon
As we all know, the factory has undergone some changes and the store is part of these changes. We, as the store with
the dedication and hard work of the team are moving and adapting to work and assist in the production of the factory.
A normal day starts with a rush of job cards that are required for urgent jobs, from sheet metal, tubing to all electrical
and refrigeration components. The team work hard in getting everybody’s needs attended to as speedy as possible and
this is only possible with the help and patience from all in the factory that require assistance as we know that all jobs are
urgent. A special Thank You to the team that are working to the improvement of the stock count on a monthly basis and
by maintaining the stock levels and ensuring great results at the end of the month.
To Mike, Ismail, Timda, Achmat, Ryan, William and Alfred for all the hard work and dedication. We would like to welcome
Bronwyn as part of our team. A special note to Ryan and his wife Desiree for the upcoming birth of their 2nd child.

As a company we are committed to help the Doornbacht
community any way we possibly can. It begun with their soup
kitchen we supplied, followed by food donations from Moores
Rowland, thanking them for their contributions.
We received the wish list from the Community Leaders and we
are asking you to make any contributions you possibly can. We
have subsequently found a supplier of mattresses and carpet
tiles which we will be supplying to the community.
Boxes are available at our national offices where we will be
collecting any of the following items for the adults and children
- blankets; clothes; shoes; old mattresses would all be appreciated.

We have had some excellent contributions from staff, with
regards to surviving the mess that Zim is in, on a daily basis:
Nora our cleaning and catering executive for creating a bush
kitchen to make our tea when we don't have electricity
(every day now!) and Godfrey our landscaping executive, for
stripping every dead branch off every tree in the garden,
to fuel Nora's kitchen.
Charline, who does our tender work, for spending a total of
Z$ 10,000,000,000 to procure tender goods. If they hadn't
taken three naughts off, this time last year, she would have had
to find Z$ 10,000,000,000,000. The biggest note is 100,000
and this Z$10,000,000,000 would make a pile 100m high. In
real money it was the equivalent of R350,000.
Steve for making himself available for work within 48 hours
of arriving back from the Durban Tri Nations (apparently
hosted by Teasers and SAB) Rugby Test. The tour itself was
not a complete waste of time, as he now knows how to say " I love you" in at least 4 East European languages.
He claims that this will stand us in good stead when we open
Mac Brothers Kazakstan.
I'd mention Charl, but we haven't seen him since he offered to
repair a beer fridge in Gokwe about three weeks ago.
Andrew for supervising all of the above.
“Oom”, as he is affectionately known here in JHB, is most certainly in a league of his own. Firstly,
anyone who has been married for 43 years to the same woman deserves a medal. Secondly,
anyone who has 14 (yes you read right!) children deserves an even bigger medal.
Phillip has
an absolute heart of gold. His four biological and ten adopted children make his household extra
special during Christmas time.
Philip has joined Mac Brothers with 45 years experience in the refrigeration trade. He also
assists with installations. There are few that can keep up with this 63 year old!
When speaking to one of his children and asking him why he thinks his father stands out, his
response was “His love for his family and his work. My dad is the best!”
Congratulations Oom - you have no doubt shown your commitment and loyalty to your job
and the company!
Lama Bull has been employed as Mac Brothers Tea Lady from August 2002. It goes without saying that she makes the best tea! She was our ears and eyes when it came to the streets of Woodstock.
After being listed for a housing subsidy for four years she finally got her own granny-pension flat in Brooklyn. Since celebrating her 70th birthday on 20 June she has decided to take semiretirement; she is not leaving Mac Brothers permanently, but will casual 3 days a week.
Lama has been at her happiest at Mac Brothers, and also an icon in the Catering Industry. She will no doubt be missed!
At first Yunis was nervous about getting there without a visa... He made it there in one piece and after taking the Tube from Heathrow to Oxford, faced the challenge to find proper accommodation. After running from one backpackers to the next, he finally found a place to stay at 4pm. His next stop was the Crown pub before dinner (great beer!) after which he checked out the vibe.
Seeing Big Ben on a picture is not the same as seeing it in real life, if that clock was in Cape Town all the gold bells would have been stolen ages ago Yunis claims. He also went on a bus tour to Buckingham Palace - All the kings men and all the kings horses were walking the main street back into the palace. He also admired the London Tower Bridge and all the Bentleys and other exotic cars on the road. Another great experience was going to Covent Garden for the opening of Shrek 3.
Well done to Yunis for doing a superb job in London with the installation of CTFM!

Mac Brothers has more than a Mission; we have a Purpose; a Reason for doing what we do:

- Because, by making our Customers successful, they will keep buying from us and using our services

Mac Brothers counts upon your valuable contributions, keep striving, growing and adding value!
Mac Brothers JHB has been in existence since December 2003. JHB started out with Craig,
Melanie, Jeffrey and Phillemon working out of a double garage in Boksburg, to a 340m2
unit, then a 705m2 unit, and hopefully soon to a 3000m2. They now boast a staff compliment
of 38 members. They have also managed to double their turnover year after year and their
vision is to have their own test kitchen and training facilities and (fingers-crossed) also to
own their premises by the end of 2007.
Our teams consist of the following individuals:
- sales is spear headed by Piero and fellow possies , Justin, Angus, Willie and Daniel;
- our dynamic designers Warren and Leona R;
- exceptional accounts team: Melanie, Muriel and Leona;
- Daniel who has just recently been promoted to Craig’s side-kick who handles sales and
installations;
- an overworked, underloved service department run by Lelanie and her merry band members,
Quintus and Brenda;
- Julani and Simone on quotes and purchasing with our front lady Lejea at reception;
- last but most certainly not least, our pensioner P.A- Ellen
We currently have four technicians, three installers and eight vehicles available 24/7, and
still these figures are no way near enough to handle the large response we have received
in Gauteng.
This branch has most certainly not only been hard work, but hard at play as well. Between
go-carting and Piero almost losing his
fingers to paint ball, and actually aiming at his
department leaders head (hitting balls eye and getting away with it), it’s most certainly
any
employees dream! We have also narrowly lost fingers, an arm and a piece of ear.
Not to mention our very own Macfana Macfana - this is a must see, a soccer team consisting
of overweight alcoholics and several foreigners, chasing a little ball round an arena.
Nebuilizer’s are available before and after kick off.
Mac Brothers JHB has grown from strength to strength; this would not have been possible
without the exceptional bunch of loyal and dedicated staff members!

Once again the Protea's have shown how good they can be in
the final of a series. They really come to the party, their consistency is immaculate and the way they manage to lose in
every final is beyond us! Let’s hope their results improve in upcoming tournaments.
The debate of sending our 'B' side to Australasia has been a hot topic in the bar after work, this could be an extremely wise ploy by our couch Jake White, only time will tell. Surely anyone who is a betting man would wager against the All Blacks taking the Tri-nations once again.
Roger Federer, although showing his true class by defending his Wimbledon title for a record equalling fifth time against Raphael Nodal (an up-and-coming great) forgot what sport he was playing when receiving his trophy. He wore his lawn bowls outfit! Barring that, it was definitely the best final we have witnessed for a while at the All England Club.
As far as the Currie Cup goes there have been some strange results but then again, when half your players are on holiday or across the pond, I believe the Helen Keller XV would be in with a shout, especially when you could be sporting a front row such as Peter Ranson Grant Roodtman and Paul Schafer.
